Description

Tucked away in an enclosed hill is Hyrule’s most famous ranch: Lon Lon Ranch. Named after the owners, Malon and Talon, they’re names are popular in the Hyrule Royal Guard. I’ve heard of them (remember: I was knighted by Zelda recently) during lunch at the Hyrule Café. They say that they breed horses perfect for races and for combat. Jousting is still among my favorite pastime, both in participating and observing. It loses out to horseback archery. The knights even mentioned the owner’s beautiful daughter. I decided to meet these famous horse breeders.

I left the castle grounds and journeyed to the ranch, arriving a few minutes later. As soon as I walked in, I heard loud snoring coming from the house on the left. I swear it could shatter windows! Surely to the Goddesses he can hear himself! I continued on and heard a beautiful song coming from the corral, sung by a redheaded maiden. I entered the corral and approached the singing girl. The song she sang was familiar, for Link played it on his ocarina to summon his trusty steed, Epona. The girl sang this lovely melody while she brushed the horse’s hair, stopping as soon I got close. She turned to face me just as I took the picture.

Here’s the song she was singing: [link]

This lovely girl is Malon, played by the amazingly talented :iconluna-ishtarcosplay:. I felt inspired seeing all these cosplays of her. And the full body image of her is exactly what the doctor ordered! Trying to find all those background images took longer than I would’ve liked. Times like that make me wish I could travel. Finding actual ranches and horses would’ve been better than Google searching.

Finding a horse that even slightly resembled Epona was the real challenge. I still don’t think I came close ^^;. I did change some of the Ranch’s layouts. I didn’t like the fence in game, so I went with one that’s used in modern times. It leaves no shadow because it doesn’t have one in the game either. My guess is hardware limitations. Besides, I haven’t figured out this shadow casting in Photoshop yet, so bear with me.

Malon is based on Marin from Link’s Awakening, who in turn is based on Zelda. You will first find her in Hyrule Castle Town, where she asks you to look for her father toward the castle. You’ll find her later at the ranch, singing that lovely song to her horses. She will later teach you the song on your ocarina, which you can use to summon Epona later in the game. I have also discovered playing this song to cows make them produce milk for your bottles.

SPOILER ALERT!
When you return to the ranch in the future, you will find that ownership has changed to Ingo, the disgruntled employee. He threatens to abuse the horses if Malon does not follow his orders. Such a tragedy that such a beautiful farm girl has to endure. Fortunately, you can race Ingo in a horse race, and victory will get you a new ride and restore freedom to the ranch. Maybe this is why Malon is fascinated with Link. Mounted on that horse makes Link appear like a knight in shining armor!
END SPOILERS

Next time you’re in Hyrule, stop on by Lon Lon Ranch and ride one of their fine stallions. Don’t forget to also take some milk with you. It’s very thirst-quenching and never spoils (it survives a seven year trip through time. Don't ask). Bring some flowers for the lovely maiden of the ranch. Listen to her sing as well, for it is one of the loveliest voices in all of Hyrule.
